HIKINGS
Leave your worries and stress behind and join us for a taste of authentic Slovenia. Hiking is a wonderful therapy for people of all ages and offers the chance to explore a well-preserved natural environment at every step.
Our beautiful region is also close to surrounding cities and we have numerous hiking trails crisscrossing mountains and valleys and all very accessible for persons of a reasonable fitness level. It is therefore no surprise that hiking by locals and overseas visitors is such a popular activity in Slovenia. The choice of trails is remarkable: from easier short walks along the valleys and foothills, to highly challenging protected trails in the high mountains, where you can enjoy views of the Alpine peaks. There is something for everyone, but it is rare that you meet large numbers of people…it is a tranquil place and you can simply enjoy the peace at a leisurely pace far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Slovenia covers just over 20,000 square kilometres, and has almost 10,000 kilometres of signposted trails.
So walk around a little and explore this latticework of trails and the charm of hiking in Slovenia…
Local hiking opportunities include:-
The majority of the trails can be hiked throughout the year, provided we have favourable weather and you are properly equipped. However, the best time for hiking is from April to October.
Mt Mangart (2678 m) is a peak of the Julian Alps, lying in the border between Italy and Slovenia. It is Slovenia's fourth highest mountain and is very popular during the summer months due to its convenient access. Namely, the Mangart road (Slovenia's highest road) takes you above 2000 altitude meters just below Mangart's rocky summit pyramid. The road ends at the Mangart saddle. From there, we'll hike about 30 minutes until we reach the entrance of the Slovenian via ferrata route. There are two routes running across it: the Slovene route is rather demanding, but the Italian is somewhat easier, that fore we will climb on the easier route down. This is a relatively short tour onto a majestic mountain with a magnificent view. Either way, the mountain is fantastic!
It will take between 1 to 2 hours to complete the route. Even though it's quite technical, it's still suitable for beginners. Finally, we'll descent on the Italian route, back to the Mangart saddle.
We start our day with a short drive to the high plateau Pokljuka overlooking the beautiful Bohinj Valley from where we begin our walk at Medvedova Konta. From here we follow a delightful trail through spruce forests before emerging at the snow covered alpine pasture, Planina Lipanca. Here you will see some traditional Slovenian high farm buildings and there is also a mountain hut where we take well needed refreshments. Our trip then progresses over more open ground before emerging on the summit of Debela Pec (2014 metres) commanding stunning panoramic views of the Gorenska region. With good visibility we will be able to see Lakes Bled and Bohinj, the Julian Alps, Karavanken Alps bordering Austria and south towards the Ljubljana plain. This is a truly breathtaking walk and a gret introduction to Slovenia trekking, suitable for active families and adult groups with average fitness and includes moderate gradients suitable for people of all ages. If you have plenty of energy it may also be structured as a circular walk taking in Planina Javornik where you can see traditional farm buildings evocative of a bygone era and dating back over 100 years dotted around open alpine pasturelands.
Duration: 5 hours
After a transfer to Pristava hut we will walk towards Golica - the 4th highest peak in the Karavanke Mountains, and then continue to Planina pod Golico, especially known for the wild white narcissus flower which flourishes in mountain pastures around the village from late April to early May. The plants have been protected by law since 1949 and picking them is strictly forbidden.
Born's tunnels and Karavanke mountains - we make our way around the outside of the beautiful mountain of Begunjščica, passing through alpine tunnels before walking up to the Prevala mountain hut where we'll enjoy the view and the stunning panorama. Estimated arrival at Roblekov dom for a little rest while enjoing the breathtaking panoramic views.
Walk down to Draga and Grad Kamen (castle rock) a 12th century castle hidden in a valley at the foothold of the Karavanke mountains.
Duration: approx. 3 h
The hut is located on Okrešelj, a glacial cirque with an interesting geomorphological appearance and a rich flora of colourful carpets of mountain flowers. The hut is a starting point for mountain tours and exploration of landscape diversity of the mountain cirque. The hut is accessible by a marked path from the parking lot running below Rinka falls, an hour's leisurely walk. Free time for lunch on the way. Continue: The Logar valley is one of the most beautiful alpine glacial valleys in europe. It extends into the Kamnik-Savinja alps from the north. A part of the Solčavsko region, tradition and nature have found harmony here, serving as a good example of sustainable development. As an added value to agriculture and forestry, tourism offers an opportunity for relaxation in the peaceful ambience of the landscape park as well as hiking, cycling, horseback riding, photo hunting, etc.
Nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps, Mount Triglav is undoubtedly the most beloved peak in Slovenia.
Not only is it the highest peak in the country, at a height of 2864 m, but it's also a powerful national symbol. It's such a trace of identity that it is said that every "true" Slovenian should stand on the summit of Mount Triglav at least once in their life. But Slovenians are not the only ones allured by the majestic Triglav. Most climbers travelling to Slovenia have it on their bucket lists. And many others choose it as a first experience in the mountains.
We'll start our hike in Krma and go to Kredarica hut-here we will stay for the night. The next day we'll climb to the top of MT Triglav and then go back down to Krma.
We will hike up Begunjscica, a ridge mountain which commands great views of other surrounding mountains and down to the Sava Valley from Lake Bled to Bohinj. The landscape is magnificent. On a clear day the cities of Ljubljana, Kranj, Bled, Lesce, Jesenice are all visible. It is also known as the mountain of a hundred ravines.
Start at: Ski hotel. We will move on to Orlove glave either by foot or with a chair lift (not included), after that along Šija chair lift and on to Visoki orlov rob (1800m). A descent over a mountain ridge and you are at Šija mountain pass, only a steep grass slope away from the top. When the weather is clear, you get an unforgettable view at the Šija's top. You make a descent back to the transverse path and walk westwards to reach the "vrata" pass (1725m). The mountain slope is quite steep and you need to be careful. It leads to the main ridge, where you make a steep ascent to the Vogel's top (1922m). Once more you are fascinated by a view of the Julian alps, Karavanken mountains and coastal mountains. A descent down a marked path and you are at Zadnji Vogel mountain pasture. Only a slight ascent past the log cabins and you are back at ski hotel. Worth to see: snow in the depression under vogel also in summer. Remains of a mountain pasture in Zadnji Vogel. Free time for lunch and cable car back down.
After a short drive adjacent the shore of Bohinj Lake through beech forests to Savica Falls we begin our ascent to the Komna Mountain Hut walking along a former 1st World War trail which traverses back and forth up the mountainside through a beautiful beech forest. The trail is very well made and has stood the test of time with a well made series of switchbacks underpinned by substantial stoneworks at key sections as we traverse the otherwise steep mountainside. Throughout the walk you will see many remnants of such stonework laid down by soldiers from the 1st World War which make up our route along a former supply line mule trail. Thankfully, as a result of the soldiers endeavours, the walking is fairly easy and within 2.5 hours we will emerge at the Komna Hut commanding stunning views of Bohinj Lake, Vogel and neighbouring mountains – the perfect place for our lunch stop where you can either picnic outdoors or purchase food and enjoy panoramic views towards Bohinj Lake from the Komna Hut. After lunch we the descend by the same route back to Savica Falls. However, if you wish to extend this trip we can continue the walk to Planina na Kraju where you can see various remnants of buildings from the 1st World War before back to Savica Falls.
Duration: 5-6 hours
Leaving the valley our forest trail takes us into martuljek gorge, as we slowly start our ascent following the stream, where we arrive at the lower fall, cascading down to the valley. The trail snakes its way through the forest where we arrive at our rest stop and enjoy the view. Lipovceva hut has a lovely setting and is known for its open natural kitchen and delicious home-made mountain soups.
From here we head up to the stunning higher falls, passing a monument dedicated to slovene climbers. This is a lovely walk into the gorge, suitable for all weathers and offering some fine views of two beautiful waterfalls, mount spik and martuljek mountain range.
Walk back to gozd Martuljek and drive to Planica.
Visit Planica ski jump area. It is one of the entries to Triglav national park is a famous ski-jumps place with elegance ski jump. Here the first jumps over 100 metres and over 200 metres were made. The new skiing discipline-ski plying started. Hike to Tamar valley.
On our trek in the Mostnica Gorge we follow the crystal clear Mostnica stream which has carved a 2 kilometre gorge just above the village of Stara Fužina in Bohinj and easily accessible right from the shore of Bohinj Lake. In some places the stream bed is extremely narrow and the gorge walls reach up to 20 metres in height. In the upper part of Mostnica the valley widens presenting the idyllic valley of Voje with splendid meadows and (mostly) traditional-style holiday homes. At the end of the valley there is a typical local café and the delightfully pretty Voje waterfall. Canyoning is also possible in the gorges of Mostnica and this can be organised as part of your trip by prior arrangement. The Voje valley offers easy walking for mixed ability groups in a stunningly beautiful location and you can enjoy a typical Slovenian – Bohinj lunch to compliment your visit.
Duration: Mostnica Gorge 1.30h or Full trip 3.30-4h
One of many highlights of your trip is a fully guided all day hiking excursion to the heights of the former Rapallo Border between Slovenia and Italy after the Second World War. This splendid location provides a superb vantage point to survey the surrounding countryside and is the only place in the whole of Slovenia where you can see Mt Triglav, Bled, Bohinj Lake and the Adriatic coast (weather permitting). The views are simply breathtaking and will last long in the memory and you will also discover remnants of bunkers and trenches steeped in history from the First World War. A walk along the former borderline is a real treat for history lovers. After World War I, the Rapallo Treaty of 1920 ceded the territory of Slovenia’s Primorska region to Italy. The Italians occupied the Baška grapa area, set up border markers and built roads, barracks, bunkers, and other fortifications on the mountain peaks until the beginning of World War II. When they lost the region again after World War II, many of these objects were overgrown by vegetation, but some were preserved and today make interesting historical monuments including the bunker on Kup, the fortification and border markers on top of Mount Bača, the barracks on Mount Možic, the iron bunker on Mount Lajnar, and many others. The marked trail along the old border maintained by the Podbrdo Tourist Association leads across the peaks above the Baška grapa gorge (Porezen, Slatnik, Možic, and Črna prst), beginning and ending in Podbrdo.
Duration: 4-6 hours
Our trekking excursion starts off with a 10km drive into the mountains to Javorje from where we begin with a 45 minute walk to Planina Suha. We walk firstly through pine forests before emerging on more elevated broken ground where you will see alpine pasturelands and some traditional mountain huts. At this stage we have a brief stop to take in our surroundings before heading onwards to Lepa Suha from where you will be able to see Rodica in constant view until we reach its summit. This part of the walk is now on open grassland and presents a truly beautiful scene of peace and tranquility in the mountains.
Once on the summit of Rodica the views are sublime and in good conditions we can see Mt. Triglav, Bohinj Valley and lake, Krn, towards Primorska and all the way to the Adriatic coast.
Duration: 5-6 hours
We will be transferred to Zavrsnica, the starting point, from where we'll walk towards Valvazor Hut. And from there we will continue towards the top of Mount Stol (1636m) - highest peak of the Karavanke mountain range, and feast your eyes on the stunning views across Bled and the surrounding landscape.
This morning begins with a short drive to high plateau Pokljuka which is also the location for an annual Biathlon World Cup. From here we follow a mountain path runs along the route of the Visevnik ski lift adjacent a spruce forest. The trail is fairly easy underfoot starting on open ground before it becomes a litlle more broken and rocky towards the Visevnik summit. Once on the summit you will have beautiful views towards Mt. Triglav, Tosc, Bohinj Valley and Lake, the Karavanken mountains and surrounding mountains in all directions. The summit is the perfect place for our breakfast stop where you will have plenty of opportunity for photograph before we begin our easy descent back to Rudno Polje. In the months of September and October you will also be able to see various wild mushroom species on the forest floor with a stunning array of shapes and vivid colours. . This is a relaxing walk with stunning views for minimum effort - enjoy!
No visit to this region Bohinj would be complete without visiting the stunningly beautiful landscape of the Triglav Seven Lakes Valley nestled in a tranquil location 1500 metres above sea level. This is a fully guided all day hiking excursion taking in three stunning mountain lakes, picturesque mountain forests and delightful alpine pastures with grazing cows and traditional timber framed farm buildings. During this trip you will see four grazing pastures where we can stop off to sample cheese and sour milk at local farms.
