Itinerary

Highlights:

  • The confluence of the rivers Soča and Tolminka
  • Napoleon bridge on the Soča river
  • Kozjak waterfall
  • remains of trenches, caverns, firing ditches and bunkers from World War I
  • Kobarid as the centre of local cuisine in the valley
  • The Kobarid museum
  • Tolmin Gorges

1. First you will visit the confluence of the rivers Soča and Tolminka, the most popular natural swimming spot in this area and then cycle along the Soča river. On the way to Kobarid and back you will be able to see quite a few military chapels, an ossuary and cemeteries from World War I.

2. Before a longer stop in Kobarid, take a short trip to Kozjak waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Julian Alps. A 15 min walk from the cycling path through a pleasant forest near the Soča river will bring you to one of the nicest waterfalls in Slovenia – Great Kozjak. The ambient approaching the waterfall is spectacular – increasingly narrow walls, a stunning rocky amphitheatre and the cute waterfall with its beautiful pool.

3. You can make a short detour and visit the remains of the bunkers and caverns from World War I. We continue our journey towards Kobarid. Where the gorge of the Soča river is at its narrowest, you will overpass it by crossing the Napoleon bridge, a single bridge made of stone that was built in 1750. Napoleon’s troops marched across it on the way to Predel Pass.

4. Kobarid offers many monuments of World War I and it’s known as the culinary centre in Soča walley – the perfect spot to make a lunch stop. A visit of Kobarid museum or the Italian ossuary is highly recommended.

5. On the way, back to Tolmin you will cycle through picturesque scenery and villages near the Soča river. At the end of this attraction-filled tour, visit the famous Tolmin Gorges with the Devil’s bridge and Dante’s cave. The Tolmin gorges are the lowest and southernmost entry point into the Triglav National Park and Tolmin’s most important natural sight.
